Latest Work

The title of the latest series, “Wall Without a Window” is a metaphor borne out of a shrewd observation of a phenomena we are still awkwardly and clumsily treading our way about — namely the phenomena of social media and the internet. It is a deceiving monster this, it ensnares with its net of colorful confusion of the senses by the seduction of windows of information which from its user extorts a certain kind of resignation, paralysis, obedience, and self-diminution; it traps one behind virtual walls, it leads to a vicarious existence and inexorably keeps one mediocre while the window to his own life turns into a desolate desert. The rod of obedience administered by social media brings its user to his knees at which point he begins to beg for the constant stamp of approval of his value and utility, he readily gets himself confused and in this confusion begins to live thoughtlessly and carelessly. The worshipping of information—that is no end in itself but precisely the lack of an end.

The Artist

SARA LUCASI / BORN 1993 IN CROATIA

The ominous cloud of technology that hangs over our heads, the impudent hands that vex, confuse and distract us with ever increasing frequency and efficacy has become the new inexhaustible well of ideas for an artist. Sara Lucasi, born in 1993 in Rijeka, Croatia is a hyperrealist painter exploring the above mentioned themes regarding technology, idealisation, and a worrying disappearance of the vessel that humanity is eternally indebted to for its progress — solitude. She studied at the Rijeka Academy of Applied arts where in the year 2017, she graduated with honors, receiving her Master’s Degree in Applied Arts. In addition to painting, her repertoire includes silk painting as well as web and graphic design.

Her artworks attempt to recapture beauty as the highest ideal, as something categorical, something that must by no means be sacrificed on the altar of the cold, calculating world of utility, material acquisition and vicarious living. It serves the observer as a reminder, a plea, an exhortation to self-preservation; a hiding place where he, like the artist, can lose himself for a time. Characteristic about her paintings is the meticulousness which ardently strives to overcome the loss of vibrancy and play of colors by accentuating the details that the photograph lacks the means to convey.

Sara Lucasi’s influences are eclectic, ranging from old masters to contemporary artists: Rembrandt and his inimitable use of light to create an atmosphere of soft melancholy; Gerhard Richter and his versatile oeuvre; Alyssa Monks with her blurring of the lines between realistic and abstract; Monet for his use of light color palette, but perhaps at present, the influence of romantic landscape painters stretched its arm the longest with their appeal to the expression of inner emotional states in a world where emotions are viewed with a mistrustful eye and a haughty look of contempt.

Abysses, silent hiding places and citadels of repose are the themes presently renting Sara Lucasi’s heart amidst the tempestuous time of modernity but as for the future, who has the audacity to predict the whimsical nature of an artist?
